The enemies are fairly smart about where they go and what they do, so you'll need to be able to hit them before they hit you. This is a very good thing as the game is remarkably difficult, with only one direction of movement and no access to cover. As you explore Hell, you will uncover the secrets of its inhabitants: by attacking certain enemies, you'll get access to special secrets that are needed to control the demons now that Lucifer is dead.

For example, the dynamite and fireballs might occasionally explode on use instead of, say, just rolling harmlessly off the screen. There's nothing here that's not in the other games, but it's all streamlined and there's less to go wrong. This means you can pick the weapons you use just as you see fit, switching from a dynamite-and-fireball combo to a Molotov cocktail for no apparent reason. You simply move through a grid-based level, and use the same button combinations to jump, push, pull, crouch and attack regardless of what weapon you are using. There are no classes to think about, no weapon upgrades to manage, and no health points to worry about. There's a lot of intensity here, and the audio really adds to the sense of occasion.īattle Out Of Hell is a pretty neat blend of action and RPG elements. The atmosphere is all-encompassing, with demonic screams, wailing sirens, and the crackle of gunfire forming a kind of audio chaos. The soundtrack on the other hand, is aural bliss.

Although the game starts with a vast array of sounds, you'll soon be using your own weapons and ammo, so you won't get to hear much of anything. There's a lot of detail here, and the more you explore, the more you see. The characters, especially the demons, seem a lot more varied, as do the levels, which are all new. Like the first game, the graphics in Battle Out Of Hell are all done in a steampunk-esque style, with the familiarly blocky polygons of the original game replaced with a more realistic, more varied look.
